I’ve been away for a bit, you may have noticed – that’s because I’ve been organising some exciting new features for the blog – this is the first of them, I think it was definitely worth the wait.
I’m sure you’ll remember the subjects of one of our first Band Hype articles, Venice Ahoy. Having regrouped and rearranged themselves as a three piece, we got in touch, dragged them out of the studio, and popped the lads some quickfire questions…
Firstly how did you come up with a fantastic name like Venice Ahoy?
The name Venice Ahoy was invented while reading about Venice fashion week in a Grazia magazine.
You previously played as a foursome; you’re now playing as a three-piece… for those readers who don’t know the band that well, what is the new line-up?
Venice Ahoy is;
Joshua Parker – Bass and Vocals
Chris Peden - Guitar
Ian Petts – Drums
Do you think playing as a three piece will change your style and sound in the future?
We’ve been writing and performing as a three piece for about six months and over this time we have been perfecting our sound. Using the space of only one guitar to our advantage, we have created a much bigger sound. This is Venice Ahoy.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and where’s your favourite spot?
We’ve been very lucky to play all over the UK, with some fantastic bands, so I guess it’s hard to name our best gig, although every time we’ve played Birmingham and High Wycombe it’s been amazing. We put everything into our performances and make the most out of every show we play.
Which do you prefer, collecting your thoughts and recording in the studio, or playing live, and why?
We’re lucky enough to have a practice room with a home studio. We have everything set up and we’re constantly recording our thoughts, we have already demoed the majority of the new album here ourselves.
We also love playing live, nothing beats the feeling of people singing your songs back to you. So, there’s no preference – just the full package.
Which bands inspire you, and who do you look up to?
Between the three of us we listen to a wide range in music, we incorporate this in our sound.
What’s your favourite time of day to record music?
We don’t really have a time or day because we’re completely isolated in our practice room, but we like to create a mood with lava lamps :D
Which of your songs gets the crowd going the most?
We have played a select amount of shows over the past month to see how the new material would be received. We have been blown away by the reaction our new songs have created. We wouldn’t let people hear our music if we didn’t think our songs were this special.
Have you ever covered anyone elses tracks? If not, is there a track who you would enjoy adding your own signature to?
No we have not, but maybe in the future for Radio 1′s Live Lounge :D
What was your trip to New York like?
Recording in New York was an amazing experience. We recorded at Mission Sound, Brooklyn. We plan on returning there during November. It was extremely cold but we were locked away most of the time we were there. Lots of huge bands record there, so it’s quite nice to join the list of artists.
You’re working on a new album – have you decided on a name yet?
Over the past few months we’ve been locked away in our practice room (The Temple of Doom, mwahahahahahahaha), writing and recording demos. We haven’t thought of a name for the album yet.
Do you know when the album will be finished?
Not sure when the album will be finished and released, as we’re going to be recording at a few different studios.
However, we’re going to New York in Nov/Dec to record our first single at Mission Sound Studios. The single will hopefully be released in January 2011.
Thinking a bit further ahead, about the future, once the album is recorded… do you have any plans?
We have plans for the release, we have plans for the future, however we’re keeping it all under wraps till the new year… ;)
Great to hear from the boys, and naturally we’re buzzing to hear the album once it’s done – for now you’ll have to content yourself with their current material, which you can find at this band hype article which featured on this blog a few months back! Hopefully we might get a chance to hear from the lads again once the mystery project is completed and unveiled!
